Subject: Alias Repair 1.0
This init provides a mechanism to repair broken aliases on the fly.
#### BINHEX alias-zoo-202.hqx ****

From: cmccollu@ra.uvic.ca (Cliff McCollum)
Subject: AliasZoo 2.0.2 update
AliasZoo is a utility to locate, verify, repair, rename, and re-connect
alias files on any of your mounted volumes. This version is a
complete re-write of the original AliasZoo and includes a number of
new features:
- The Find and Resolve functions have been seperated. This allows
you to quickly locate and view all the alias files on a drive without
having to wait for them to be resolved (resolving checks that they
still points to something valid).
- Alias files that have been orphaned (they no longer point to their
target file) can be automatically reconnected by AliasZoo 2.0. It will
search for any file with a matchineg file/creator type and a matching
creation date - on ANY mounted drive. If such a file is found, it will
be automatically re-connected.
- Alias files can now be renamed from within AliasZoo.
- The 'Get Info' dialog in AliasZoo now displays the icon of the target
file (in color where possible).
- The interface has been completely reworked. The main window is
now resizable, and the status of alias files are indicated by small
icons (rather than changing the line's color - which didn't work too
well on grayscale monitors).
- You can choose whether or not AliasZoo will resolve aliases to local,
removable, or network volumes independant of one another.
- When resolving alias files to non-local volumes, AliasZoo will not
unmount the volume until it absolutely has to. This prevents you
from having to enter your password each time a network alias is
resolved.
- Better feedback is given while alias files are being resolved.
- And many other new features, changes, and abilities.
AliasZoo requires System 7, is 32-bit clean, supports the required
AE's, and runs fine on every Mac I have been able to test it on (SE,
LC, CI, Powerbook, Quadra 700-950). This archive includes the
application itself, and a ReadMe document that explains more about
AliasZoo.
Version 2.0.2 fixes the following bugs:
- The divide-by-zero error no longer occurs when volumes with no alias
files are selected.
- The help dialog appears properly on Color Quickdraw equipped machines
with B&W monitors (powerbook, SE/30s, etc).
- The 'Smart' unmounting of network volumes has been made smarter. Things
should work better now for users with more than 10 volumes mounted during
resolve scans.
Shareware. $15.

(2) an .sea of a folder w/ everything related to the program
i am submitting these on behalf of John A. Schlack (the author) who is not

direct internet access is not necessary... i have sent him a copy of this
submission, as well as the sumex submission guidelines for future use... his

"attributes" is a handy file utility that allows easy access to the
'creator', 'owner', 'stationary', 'locked', and other fields of information
kept by the finder about each file... with a simple drag-n-drop interface...
as i understand the sumex file layout, attributes seems like something
that would go in either "/info-mac/disk" or "/info-mac/util"... i think that
john would like to know where it ends up, so that he can tell internet users he
knows... so he would probably appreciate a quick note from you confirming the

What Is Attributes ?
Attributes is a flexible program designed to alter file
information using a drag-and-drop interface. Drag a set of file /
folder / disk icons onto this program's icon and Attributes will change
the file information according to user specification. This function
only works on files. Dropping folders or disks onto Attributes will
modify the information of the contents of the folders or disks.
Information that can be modified includes date and time of file
creation / last modification, creator, file type, invisibility, and lock
/ unlock attributes. The user can operate on all files or files that
matching specified criteria (such as creator, file type, etc.) while in
the batch mode. If only a single file is dropped on the Attributes
icon, it's characteristics can be modified interactively.
This program is quite useful for a variety of circumstances:
* toggling Teach Text documents from read only to editable
* transferring text files between the Mac and IBM PCs (permits
definition of a program to launch [creator] when double clicking
on the file from the Finder)
* altering the creation and modification dates and times of groups
of files (useful for programmers when releasing new versions of
software and support files)
* hiding files in the Finder
* locking groups of files to prevent them from being altered or
deleted accidentally
* interactive editing of a file's characteristics
* others limited only by the imagination

From: Samuel S. Tai <sstai@ocf.Berkeley.EDU>
AutoAssassin 1.1
(c) 1992 Bill Monk
This freeware INIT comes courtesy of ZiffNet/Mac.
If you've ever come across a corrupted alias, and gone through the hassle of
fixing it; or if you've wished for a faster way to find an alias' original, or
the comments thereof; this is just what the doctor ordered.
Whenever the Finder forgets where an alias points, AutoAssassin will display a
dialog asking if you would like to delete the corrupted alias, ignore the
problem (you might want to do this if you have an alias to an unmounted disk,
or a server that's gone down), or to recreate the link to the original. If you
choose the third option, AutoAssassin will display a standard file dialog, and
recreate the link upon opening the original.
Some more goodies:
Command-double-clicking on an alias, or command-selecting an alias from the
Apple Menu sends a <Find-Original> Apple Event to the Finder.
Control-double-clicking an alias, or control-selecting an alias in the Apple
Menu sends a <Get-Original's-Info> Apple Event to the Finder.
AutoAssassin requires System 7.0 or later. It is 32-bit clean, virtual memory
capable, and Quadra cache-compatible. Known incompatibilities: it is completely
incompatible with HAM 1.0, and must load after Kiwi PowerWindows.

THERE HAS BEEN A LOT OF TALK ABOUT THIS INIT ON THE LISTS
LATELY, SO I THOUGHT I'D UPLOAD IT. HERE'S THE ORIGINAL HEADER:
From: shores@fergvax.unl.edu (Shores)
BADInit by Giuseppe Carnevale. This *WONDERFUL* INIT can save seemingly lost
floppy disks from the bit bucket. Ever had a "File couldn't be written and
was skipped?" Of course you have, and this INIT fixes all that. The INIT fools
the disk's desktop file into thinking that files are occupying the bad sectors
of the disk so you can write to the good parts of the disk too. When you get
a bad disk that had been formatted and had files on it, salvage the good files
and tell the finder to reformat it. When the finder fails, it will eject the
disk, but after you hit "ok" in the "Initialization Failed" dialog, another
dialog will popup asking you if you want to format it using BAD. Hit OK to
work BAD's magic. Likewise, with a brand new floppy that fails under the
Finder's initialization, BAD will format it, most likely leaving over 95% of
the disk still useable. Obviously one wouldn't want to put one's only copy
of a doctoral thesis on the disk, but you can still use the disk for trivial
tasks.

Enclosed is a browser like program. I was toying with the idea of making
a browser like library that programmers could use. In about four hours
this is what I came up with. Obvious things still need to be added
(like the finder's triangles) but I don't know if its worth the effort. If
you think you would like a program like this or could use a library like
this, email me and I'll see if there is a big enough response.
This runs on system seven only for now.

CD Coyote is a program for CD-ROM drive users who listen to audio
CD's and has written disc information to CD Remote DA and wish to
make a TEXT file of that information. CD Coyote is FREE!
CD Coyote needs System 7 or later to run. You also need to have
CD Remote (or to be precise the CD Remote Programs file) to get
the information from.
Changes from the first release:
- Added to look for CD Remote Programs file from System folder too.
- Removed automatic saving if drag-and-drop is used.

ChangeTypeCreator.c
Change the file type and creator of any file dropped onto
this program. Prompts for the file type and creator, and
changes all files dropped at the same time to the same type
and creator.
Written by Brian Bechtel, based on code by Juri Munkki
Feel free to use the code in your programs.
Modified by Pete R. Jemian, Late-Nite(tm) Software
Option was added to convert TEXT files to the
chosen system of EOL (end-of-line) characters. Note that EOLs
on DOS files are <CR><LF> (VAX also uses this EOL format)
on Mac files are <CR>
on UNIX files are <LF>
If you aren't bothered by this, that's just great. If you
are, this little hack will surely help. Very useful for
moving TEXT files between DOS, Mac, and UNIX machines
by diskNet (copy file onto disk, remove disk, sneaker it
to other machine, ...).
BTW: Set the application's size to that of the largest file
that you expect to convert EOLs. The EOLconvert code
reads the entire file into memory at one time, then does
the conversion as the file is re-written.
WARNING:
If you don't know what you are doing, things *could* get
pretty fouled up. They might not. UNDO is not supported.
See the source code to determine *exactly* what is done.
The problem that *could* occur is that you mistakenly select
a non-TEXT file along with other TEXT files and convert them
all to type TEXT *and* convert the EOL characters to the
selection of your choice. That's the danger. Don't do it.
You are unprotected against goofball errors like this.

Hi,
ChangeMaker is yet another application that modifies the type and creator of a
file. ChangeMaker doesn't necessarily require System 7 to run but it does
require Apple Events, Gestalt and the pop up control proc. If you have System 7,
you should be all set. ChangeMaker is shareware. I'm asking for $5 as a
registration fee. If you mail me $6 and a disk, I'll mail back the latest
version. The extra dollar is for stamps.
ChangeMaker is a drop application. Just drop a file or some files onto it's
icon, select an application from the pop up menu in the dialog box and click on
"change".
If you know how to use ResEdit, you can easily add/or change the applications in
ChangeMaker'’s popup menu, (see instructions below). Choosing entries from this
popup menu fills in the type and creator edit boxes, so you don’t have to
remember cryptic file type and creator codes. Since ChangeMaker fills in the
type and creator of the file you pass to it, you can also use it to find out the
type and creator of any file. ChangeMaker will change files one at a time or
a bunch at a time.

the files you want to join, and drag&drop them onto ChunkJoiner.
You will be asked the "type" and "creator" for the newly

application which can open the resulting file; I have added
this because the Finder 7.x can read this name and show it

Subject: DART 1.5.3
Summary
DART (Disk Archive/Retrieval Tool) is an application that enables you to
duplicate Macintosh, Lisa, Apple II, or MS-DOS disks, save disk images,
and create disks from image files. DART 1.5 can read disk image files
in DART, DiskMaker, or Disk Copy format. DART 1.5 image files are
compressed, approaching a reduction in size comparable to that obtained
by using a commercial compression utility. DART 1.5 is System 7.0 "savvy",
and implements a custom Apple event mechanism to automate the conversion of
older DART or Disk Copy files to 1.5 format. The conversion process can be
run by "remote control" (even across a network!) using the accompanying
HyperCard stack. (For more information, please refer to the DART User Manual.)
................................................................................
Features
o Data compression: more disk images can be archived in the same amount of
space.
o Data checksumming for reliable disk duplication.
o Can read Disk Copy image files.
o Requires only 224K of RAM to run.
o Stack utility enables you to batch-convert DART 1.4 or Disk Copy files.
o Apple events support ("required" AE suite and custom 'cnvt' event.)
o System 7 "drag-and-drop" disk image creation.
o 32-bit clean.
o A/UX compatible.
o Nifty color icons and balloon help.
................................................................................
What's New in version 1.5.3
o Compatibility with new Macintosh Quadra 840av and Centris 660av machines.
o Compatibility with Apple Event Manager 1.0.1 (a component of AppleScript).
................................................................................
What's New in version 1.5.2
o Compatibility with new Macintosh Quadra 800 and Centris machines.
o Under certain circumstances, it was possible for DART to open a corrupted
Disk Copy file and create an identically corrupted disk (or image file)
from it. Checksums on source disk images are now verified correctly, and
DART will always display a warning message if the expected and actual
checksum values don't match. (Note that while a damaged Disk Copy file
can no longer be converted to DART format, it's still possible to make a
disk from it and potentially salvage the data on that disk.)
o Fixed a minor (but annoying) display glitch in "Multiple Copies" mode
where a portion of the Status message would sometimes be "hidden"
underneath the progress bar.
................................................................................
What's New in version 1.5.1
o Compatibility with A/UX 3.0.
o Under System 7, you can now drop a floppy disk onto DART to create an image
file.
o The default filename in Save dialogs is now filled in with the volume name
of the source disk (if a source has been selected.)
o Volumes can now be mounted in the Finder when DART is running in the
background.
o Fixed a bug which could occasionally cause a bus error on certain machines.
The error would occur either immediately on launch, or after the about box
was dismissed.
o Fixed a bug which could cause DART to refuse to format a blank 1.4M floppy
disk (or a 1.4M floppy formatted as 800K) when "Format Disk" was checked.

To the Info-Mac Moderators...
Hi,
(here is another submission of dataByDate, without uucoding - I hope.)
I want to submit "dataByDate", a freeware data saving utility based on HyperCard.
If you have problems with my submission, let me hear.
"dataByDate" is not free for commercial distribution.
The following lines should be the information text for the digests:
About "dataByDate", version 1.06
What is "dataByDate"?
"dataByDate" is a HyperCard-stack. It runs under HyperCard 2.
"dataByDate" saves files that were altered since (or at or until) a particular date to a
folder, a disk, a network drive etc. Certain file types (e.g. INITs, applications ...) can
(and should) be excluded from the savings process.
"dataByDate" is fast, flexible and very easy to handle.

All macintosh disk have on them a file called the desktop file. this file helps your
mac keep track of what files are on your disk. But when you delete a file from a disk
the finder doesnt remove that files intry in the desktop file. therefore the desktop
file tends to get very unnessisarily large. Desktop File Killer will remove this file

Subject: [*] Disk Charmer 2.1.1
Disk Charmer 2.1.x is a neat utility that lets you conveniently
initialize (or verify) floppy disks.
It _requires_ at least System 7 to run.
It has a nice, modeless interface.
Help Balloons are everywhere.
It supports drag&drop (with the required Apple Events).
It is able to create larger disks: you gain 8.5K on a 800K disk,
18.5K on a HD disk (if you keep one large file filling the disk,
such as a Compact Pro segment).
It is the first disk formatter supporting the handy "Undo" feature
we all know and love.
It is the first disk formatter able to initialize and verify disks
(hold your breath) **in background**. To access this feature, you need
the Thread Manager Extension from Apple Computer.
It has even more features... but I am sure you are already impressed!
New from version 2.1:
A wonderful and subtle bug lurked in the code I wrote to allow the
marvelous additions in 2.1. This could cause subtle hangs while
Disk Charmer was creating the disk catalog.
New from version 2.0.8 (the archives never saw 2.0.8, I think):
Lets you choose whether to lock out bad sectors or not;
now the first part of the bad sectors search phase can execute
concurrently with other applications, provided that you have the
Thread Manager installed.
New from version 2.0.7:
Alerts if you try using a floppy disk with open files on it;
fixed a problem with the about box, and its incompatibility with
AutoMenus II;
no more pauses between initializing and verifying (this only occurred
on some Mac models and when the Thread Manager was not installed);
a nifty registration form;
and other fixes (see the documentation for more info).
Enjoy yourself and remember the shareware fee!

Specifically, it changes the name to Finder, the Creator to MACS
and the Type to FNDR. I think it might do some other stuff too...
it's been a while since I wrote this thing. I thought I
sent it to Sumex too, but I guess I didn't...
btw-- requires system 7 and shortfinder 1.x (the latter is available on
Sumex, the former (7.0.1) is available on ftp.apple.com)
this has not been tested on 7.1, 'cause I don't choose to use it.

A File Identifier, FIID, is a file that substitutes an application you

File_Identifiers.sit contains a short instruction on how to make File

Hi netters
In response to Tom Wilson's wish for a list of file types/creators
I suggested "hacking" MacTools' Rescue and / or Norton Utilities.
These utilities must know about as many as possible TYPEs / CREATORs.
I did it myself and _two_ results follow:
1. Well, the list (+ an additional list from Tom)
2. As I worked on creating/sorting/merging the results from the two
mentioned sources, I found something interesting.
MacTools has almost twice as many entries in their list (compared to NU)
and MacTools has the ability to ADD items to its list.
All this boils down to one thing: MacTools has a better chance of
reconstructing troubled disks. Food for thought for the debate about
"which disk saving utility is better"
And I used an OLD version of MacTools Rescue (1.2), and Norton Utils 2.0.

Subject: [*] Folder Icon Cleaner 1.1
Folder Icon Cleaner is a small utility that lets you get rid
correctly of those space and time wasting custom icons, sticked
right there on your folders.
The Finder keeps every folder icon in a separate hidden file.
The known versions of the Finder (7.0, 7.0.1, 7.1) do not
delete this file when removing a custom folder icon. They only
delete the icon resources from the file. Note that no other
information is kept into these “Icon” files. Folder Icon Cleaner
correctly removes the icon by deleting the file (and by updating
the “Use custom icon” attribute of the folder). No data is lost,
you only gain a little more free space on your disk.
You can even erase every custom folder icon on your disk.
Folder Icon Cleaner can only be used under System 7 or later;
however, it is rather useless on a System 6-or-older Macintosh.
Life is easier with a drag&drop interface.
New in 1.1:
Fixed all the problems common with ChunkJoiner.
Redesigned the dialog appearing when you drag&drop a disk.
No more asks for confirmation if the folder you dropped
has no custom icon.

Folder Watcher 2.0.1 (5/17/93)
Folder Watcher is a faceless background application that keeps
an eye on an unlimited number of folders on your Macintosh, or
a remote Macintosh or server. If the contents of any of these
folders ever change, Folder Watcher will respond by showing an
alert, playing a system beep or a custom sound, writing to a
log file, executing an AppleScript script, or any combination
of these.
Folder Watcher requires System 7. Although it does not require
a network, it is most useful when used on one. Folder Watcher
is 32 bit clean and is 68040 compatible.
Folder Watcher has many great uses such as:
% Network Administrators who want to track changes to folders
on the network.
% Users can see when someone adds a new file to a TPublicU folder
and can be the first ones to check out the goodies.
% Users can keep an alias to their Tdrop boxU located on the
network server.
% Users who share a dropbox on their local hard disks can keep
an eye on it for files that another user drops off. When a user
drops a file in your dropbox, you will be alerted as soon as
possible!
% When you download files you may want all TEXT files to be routed
to a particular place on the network, use AppleScript scripts to
scan the newly changed folder for files of type TEXT and move them
for you -- automatically!
% Using AppleScript, you can perform ANY function on ANY file that
is in a changed folder the moment it changes. Think of the
possibilities! Archiving data, moving files, deleting old files,
copying to a server, stuffing files, merging data, etc.
Bugs fixed in 2.0.1:
% Fixed a bug that would cause the extension to quit when
launched if you were running < System 7.1 and not running
QuickTime. Anyone running System 7.1 or later and/or running
QuickTime 1.0 or later would not experience this problem.
Sorry about this :(
% Added an "Open Log File" button to the control panel.
% Changed the way sounds were loaded in the extension, thus
knocking 25K off the RAM required for Folder Watcher.
Full documentation is enclosed. Folder Watcher is shareware.

Here is Garbage Collector 0.1, a utility program which will be useful to
those of use fated to looking after Macintoshes that are used, misused,
and abused by many people. In my case, it's used to help clean junk off
the hard drives on the Macs in the library at the school where I teach.
The basic idea is that this program allows you to create a master map
of what the hard drive is *supposed* to look like, then use this map
to periodically restore the drive to that ideal condition, more or less.
When you use Garbage Collector to restore a drive, it scans all files
and folders, restoring moved files/folders to their original location,
restoring the names of renamed files/folders, and moving unrecognized
files to a common directory at the root level of the drive. The online
help screen describes all that and more....
The program seems to work okay so far, though I can't promise that there
isn't a big in it that will eventually reformat or scramble the drive
contents irrevocably. That's why I don't mind using on the school's
machines but not my own..... :)
Using this program is a lot easier than manually scanning files and
folders to find junk the students have put there....
If there is sufficient interest, I'll dress up the atrocious user interface
and add some bells and whistles.

Gif Typer is a file typing utility for Macintoshes the makes it easier to

the type 'TEXT' to GIF files when the are copied to the Macintosh. Users of
Red Ryder or White Knight or SunTar should appreciate this. After using GIF
Typer, the user can drag and drop GIF files onto QuickGif to open them. The
Suite also contains two other utilities which manipulate the type codes on
TEXT files specifically. They make it possible for developers to quickly
modify those read-only TeachText documents.

List Files is a very straightforward utility that creates
text catalogs of any folder or disk you drag on it.
The text file can be edited and saved for later use
(you'll be able to read or print it with any word processor
or text editor). Text catalogs are a very convenient way to
keep track of unmounted volumes (like floppies or SyQuest's)
because they are small, easy to read and easy to search.
List Files takes full advantage of System 7, but it will also run
on older systems (the minimum version required is 4.2). Just use
the "OpenI" menu item instead of System 7's drag & drop method.

down the clunky Pluses/SE's/Classics most schools seem to have, I think
there are a lot of machines still running system 6, so it seems worthwhile
to post these CDEV's.
I wrote these programs because I needed them. If you use them, please be
considerate enough to compensate me for my lost March Break (I spent the whole
week working on these things).
If you use the System Folder Lock, I ask that you send $10. If you use the
Control Panel Lock, I ask that you send $5. If you use both, just send $10.
Site licenses are available, as are educational discounts for bulk orders.
As the control panel interface says, registered users will get goodies in
return-- whatever I happen to have come up with lately, including the most
recent version of The Locks. Right now, I'm working on a program to scan
a hard drive and compare the contents against a master list of what should/
shouldn't be there, and automatically move unrecognized junk to a common
folder called "Student Work" (the kids have a habit of leaving a lot of
garbage on the hard drives, and it's a pain to manually clean it up).

DiskCopy can uses the image file to (re)create floppies, while Mount

PowerScan scans disks or folders for files and you can define advanced filters
for file types/creators, find duplicate files, autoscan floppy disks, and more.
Version 1.0 crashed big time on 68000 machines but I hope I've fixed that now.

Subject: PowerScan 2.0
Dear Netters,
This is version 2.0 of my shareware application PowerScan. It is used to scan
disks and can save, print, filter, find duplicate files and more. This version
is a complete rewrite from scratch with *many* new features:
* Support for Apple's Thread Manager! Yes, PowerScan will now run several
scan and find duplicates operations concurrently, even when in background.
Thread Manager is not included in the archive so you'll have to download
it separately from e.g. ftp.apple.com. Highly recommended!
* Greatly improved filtering. In addition to the type and creator filters
available in version 1.0, this version also handles filename, size,
creation and modification dates in any combination. Filter components can
be grouped.
* Support for external plug-in modules. Filters can be installed just by
dropping them in a folder. Also supports external pre-processors such
as the included Compact Pro archive scanner. A StuffIt preprocessor is
in the works.
* All new user interface. Select font and size for display and printing,
resizable columns, new floating palette where most settings can be
accessed.
* Saving and printing. PowerScan can now save and open directory listings.
Print options include margins, print font and header. On-screen print
preview is included.
* Many small improvements. Send select/open Apple Events to the Finder,
movable dialog boxes, better Search function, apply filter after
scanning...
PowerScan 2.0 requires System 7 or later. It is shareware $10. Included in
the package is a user's manual and parts of the programmer's documentation
(i.e. how to write a pre-processor; I will upload the filter docs when they
are finished).

I have uploaded RAMDiskSaver.cpt, which is a tiny utility that does
automatic periodic background backups of a RAM disk onto something less
volatile (like a hard disk). It ought to be just the ticket for PowerBook
users who want to extend their battery life (by leaving the hard disk spun
down most of the time) but who need some protection from system crashes, as
well as an easy way to shut down and restore a RAM-disk-based system.
The actual components (a System 7 background application and a control
panel) together occupy less than 24 K of disk space and 40 K of RAM, but the
.cpt archive is a tad large (113 K) because it includes the SuperGlue Viewer
application for reading the documentation.
This one is share-ware ($20 US) but well worth it if you use a RAM disk.

Some one and a half year ago, somebody put on the net an INIT file that
was reported to improve SCSI disk performance considerably. However,
that file contained a huge bug. Shortly after that I put on the net a
quick hack that fixed that bug. Since system 6.0x came out, I noticed
that the init no longer installed the patches. The reason was that the
init code checked the piece of code it was going to patch for the
occurrence of certain instructions so that it could be sure that it was
patching the right thing. After some hacking I found out that the
patches were still applicable, but they had to be applied at a
different position in the SCSI manager code. Thus, I fixed the INIT to
check for both cases and handle them correclty. In the process, I also
added an icon to the init, which will only be shown when the patches
are really applied. I am sending out the archive below containing
several variants of the INIT (see the READ_ME file) and some
documentation. In the documentation it is explained how it works and
for whom it will work.

which would seem to me to be of interest in a lot of university
environments where many users may have access to the same
Macintosh. The product is known as SecureInit and the latest
shareware version is provided below, which reportedly will work
until sometime in September (this is version 1.8; the full-
featured commercial version is version 2.0 which also available
now).
Basically this program is able to maintain to a large extent a
given configuration to the system software on a mac volume (by
automatically restoring selected files upon startup from pristene
versions, deleting unauthorized files from the system folder,
etc.), restrict users from running appliactions from unathorized
volumes, etc. Only someone with the application an password can
alter the configuration once a volume has been "protected".
The list of features from the shareware documentation is as
follows (these features can be enabled or disbled as required):
1. Close all windows of selected disks/volumes at startup.
2. Make the system folder invisible.
3. Replace the system file at startup if it seems to have
become corrupted, and then restart your Mac.
4. Replace any master or user selected files in the system folder
every time you restart your Mac. (ImageWriter and LaserWriter
drivers and even the Finder are often corrupted by system crashes)
5. Delete any undeclared file in the system folder. (Useful in
destroying unknown init's, files, etc...)
6. Lock all the applications.
7. Verify the applications on the protected disks/volumes
8. Disabling corrupted applications on protected disks/volumes
and changing their Icon.
9. Lock selected files in the system folder.
10. Lock the "protected" disks/volumes if the the Mac is started from
another volume.
11. Eject any system diskette being inserted in any drive and
unmount any non-declared System disks/volumes to prevent
a hard disk configuration from being changed by anyone else
other than than the user or the master having the SecureInit*
application and knowing the configuration password.
12. Prevent a user from running any application from anywhere
other than from the Mac's protected disks/volumes.
13. Purge oldest non-declared files. This means you can make a list
of never-to-delete files, and other files will be deleted as
necessary when disk space is needed for new files. Empty files
can also be automatically deleted.
14. The SecureInit* init's may be installed into the system itself.
15. SecureInit* will let you do all this to any disks/volumes
that are on-line.
16. In the commercial version (2.0-A), every configuration can be
password protected.
The documentation for the application is a bit rough (the author
is from Switzerland and English is not his first language), and
the documentation with the comercial version is only in French
but the author has told me that he is negotiating with some
North American distributor to provide the English translation
and distribute the program in N.A. The shareware edition below
is in English (though not fluently).
Finally, I disclaim any connection with the author of the program
or his company except as a short time user of the program!

Date: Thu, 16 Dec 93 14:40:13 +0100
SetupPartitions is a neat utility that lets you create more
than one Macintosh partition on a hard disk formatted with
Apple HD SC Setup.
It _requires_ at least System 6.0.4 to run.
SetupPartitions lets you use true, "hard" partitions
(as opposed to "soft" partitions).
Quadra AV users will particularly appreciate SetupPartitions:
in fact, it seems that the only driver exploiting the new
awesome hardware capabilities of the AVs is the Apple one.
So you want to format with Apple HD SC Setup.
Since these days hard disks are pretty huge, you also want
to partition. So you want SetupPartitions.
No code changes in 1.0.1; user interface adjustments &
improved documentation.
Enjoy yourself and remember the US$10 shareware fee!

Shuttle Pilot version 1.1 Demo
ShuttlePilot is a file synchronizer that works by allowing the user to
designate a list of folder-pairs that he wants to be equalized. Based upon this
list, it will copy and replace files within those folders until their contents
are equivalent. It was designed for people with two or more Macs or hard disks
and multiple copies of files that change daily. It can also be used as a simple
backup program. This demo is similar in all respects with the full program
except it will not remember the folder-pairs selected after you quit.
Version 1.1 syncs nested folders. Instructions on getting the full version for
US$39 are in the ReadMe file.
Note to Moderators: This demo should replace the earlier version 1.0 demo
in the path \info-mac\util\shuttle-pilot.hqx. It
should be correctly be put in the \demo directory.

Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii"
This is the latest version of SwitchBack (version 2.2). Please replace any
older versions with this one.
What is SwitchBack?
SwitchBack is a utility program that synchronises two folders, so that both
folders have a copy of the most recent version of their files. The two
folders can reside on the same volume, on two different volumes, or indeed
on two different computers connected by a network.
It has been designed principally for those people with two computers
(especially desktop and PowerBook) who need to ensure that they have the
most recent version of their documents available to them.
It also functions well as a simple backup utility for people with one
computer. For example, a folder residing on your main hard disk can be
linked to a folder residing on a floppy disk.
Because SwitchBack supports the required AppleEvent suite, and is fully
AppleScript-aware, you can use AppleScript to execute a series of backups
automatically. Programs that permit scheduled execution of scripts could
permit you to do a daily backup, and then shut the machine off. This
ability is very powerful.

advanced features by typing in their serial numbers in the registration window,
which comes up when you open the program.

******************************************************************************
This is Synchronize! 3.0.1, a file synchronization utility. As a way of
introducing you to Synchronize!, you may use its basic file synchronization
features FREE. Just decompress this Compact Pro archive and try it out. The
many advanced features of the program may be demonstrated with folders which
contain less than 400K. Unlimited use of the advanced features requires the
purchase of the program, which is $29.95.
The following is a list of the features of Synchronize! 3.0.1:
Features
Completely automatic operation. Starts once or periodically at a preset time,
or when disks become available. Automatically connects and disconnects
AppleTalk Remote Access and file server disks.
Hierarchical display of files to be copied, just like the Finder. See the files
which will be copied, and the folders they reside in.
Synchronize deleted files. When you delete a file from one disk, Synchronize!
recognizes that the matching file should also be deleted.
Check for conflicts. Synchronize! notifies you when two matching files have
both been changed, or a file will overwrite a matching file of another type,
and lets you set the action to be taken.
Copies files to and from any disk which appears on the desktop. Works with
AppleShare, File Sharing, and AppleTalk Remote.
Copies bidirectionally (for file synchronization) or in one direction only (for
a quick backup, or file distribution to other sites). Creates an exact
duplicate of a folder or a hard disk by copying only new or changed files.
Copies in the background, at variable speeds. Set the copying speed that best
fits your style P slow and unobtrusive, or really fast, faster than the Finder.
Log your activities. Review the results of previous synchronizations, including
ones done automatically.
Options
Each document can be customized in its operation with the following options:
**Synchronize automatically. Start synchronization at a preset time, when you
start or quit the program, or when disks become available.
**Make an AppleTalk Remote Access connection, synchronize your files, unmount a
file server, and disconnect, all without having to enter passwords.
**Show the files and folders to be copied, deleted, or moved in a hierarchical
list, with the opportunity to delete files, or remove some files from the list
of files to be copied.
**Close the document, Quit, or Shut Down when copying is complete. Run
Synchronize! as the last thing you do. Let it shut down your Mac when itUs done
copying.
**Eject disks (or unmount servers) when copying is complete.
**Use aliases to include files or folders in a synchronization, even when they
reside elsewhere on your disk.
**Copy only certain files or folders. Designate files to be copied by full or
partial file name, date modified, file type, creator, and label. Include or
exclude the contents of any folder.
**Copy AutoDoubler files in their compressed form. Copy files compressed by
AutoDoubler in their compressed form, saving time and space, even to floppy
disks!
**Verify files. Verify that floppy disks have been correctly written by
reading the information and comparing to what was written.
System 7-Savvy
Synchronize! supports Balloon Help and Apple Events. It is 32-bit clean, and
runs on all Macs which have System 6.0.2 or later, or System 7.
Try it out!
If you'd like to try Synchronize!, download it from AppleLink. For
demonstration, Synchronize! allows basic file synchronization to be used for
free; when advanced features are used, copying is limited to folders which
contain no more than 400K. On AppleLink, the path is Third Parties:Thrid
Parties(P-Z):Qdea. On CompuServe, look for SYNCH.SEA in the Misc. Applications
library of the Macintosh Applications Forum.
If you purchase Synchronize! by telephone, you receive an serial number which
will immediately enable all advanced features of the software you already have.
There is no need to wait for the product to be shipped to you.

Requires System 7.
I occasionally find myself wondering, "Did I work on this project
today?" The simple thing would be to look at the modification date
of the folder containing the project. Only that doesn't get
updated when a file is modified, only if it is added or deleted.
So this quick hack will update a folder's modification date to
reflect the most recently modified file within it (or in any nested
folders in it). Just drag 'n' drop the folder (or folders) you
want onto TouchFolder, and presto! If the folder already has a
later mod date than any of its files, it will be left alone. Also,
the nested folders are NOT modified, though their contents are
scanned.

1TrashEmptier is a 'drag and drop' utility that works only if

Here is a tool that I found on AppleLink that
solves a problem with ejecting CD-ROMs with Personal
AppleShare running.
This problem occurs when you try to unmount (trash)
a CDROM that won't eject because the CDROM "is being
shared". All you need to do is drag the CDROM
on top of Unmountit and file sharing will be turned
off, the disk ejected and then file sharing turned
back on. Simple.
This tool was created by Jim Luther from Apple's

running on that Macintosh from a remote Macintosh.

that both machines have the most recent copy of any documents that you
have worked on. Even if your Macs are not connected by a network,
UpToDate can help with transferring files from one Mac to another by
floppy disk. UpToDate can also be useful when groups of documents are
being worked on by people in different places, and it can be used for
backing up files.
UpToDate lets you link pairs of files or folders. It will help you
keep track of changes in linked files or folders by telling you when
files have changed, deleted, or new files have been created. It can
automatically copy, create, or delete the corresponding file to keep
the link up to date.
UpToDate requires System 7.0.
Version 1.1 fixes a number of bugs in 1.0 and has some new features:
* several improvements to the user interface, such as a
graphical indication of suggested update actions
* link filter provides control over which kinds of items should
actually be updated
* option to reset updated files' modification dates to the time
of the original modification instead of the time of the update
* a document can update its links, save and close itself, and
quit the application, automatically
* recognizes files copied by hand in the Finder as being
up-to-date
* works correctly across time zones and changing clocks
* documents are loaded in temporary memory
* script system awareness, with regard to writing direction and
fonts
* verifies files copied to floppy disks
* no longer uses the separate SysErrs.Err file

Please find enclosed a demo of Update!, downloaded from AppleLink.
Update! is a utility similar to InSync and PowerMerge, intended
to keep files on 2 folders or 2 Macs up-to-date.
I'm not the author, but I liked it enough (and the price, $49
postpaid) to download it and post it! It's published by a company

Subject: [*] Verifile 1.0.1
Verifile is a small utility that calculates a checksum and a
CRC32 on both the data and resource forks of any file that's
dropped on it. This is useful if you want to compare two
files that are not on the same machine without having to
copy them over a network or modem connection. If the
hexadecimal numbers displayed by Verifile match, chances are
that the two files are equal.
1.0.1 fixes a nasty bug which used to occur under System 6.
Thanks to Howard L. Dyckman (dyckman@nosc.mil) who reported
the bug.
